Guttering for barn conversions

Agricultural roofs shed a lot of water from a large plane onto a short run of gutter. Standard domestic sizing overflows in heavy rain, particularly where rooflights concentrate runoff or where a valley discharges into a single outlet.

We calculate the drained area and specify gutter capacity, outlet positions and downpipe sizes to suit — then detail the fixings to whatever the barn actually offers: rafter feet, wall plates, stonework or a new fascia.

Where a conversion sits in a conservation area or beside a listed farmhouse, cast iron or zinc usually reads best and is often what the planning officer expects. Copper suits schemes where a patina is wanted.

On contemporary conversions, seamless aluminium is the practical choice: long runs with no joints, a wide colour range, light enough for awkward fixings, and effectively maintenance-free.

Class Q and similar conversions frequently carry conditions on external materials, including rainwater goods. Plastic is often expressly excluded.
