Yes. We specialise in cast iron half-round, ogee and ornamental moulded rainwater goods for Grade I and Grade II listed buildings, rectories, manor houses and historic agricultural buildings, and liaise directly with conservation officers where required.

Our studio is in Highworth, Wiltshire. We work throughout the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Berkshire, and travel further afield across the South of England for the right commission.

Cast iron remains the correct rainwater system for many period and listed buildings, and it is still the most handsome. Properly installed and painted, it will outlive everyone reading this page.

We install new cast iron, repair and reinstate surviving runs, and match missing sections, hoppers and ornamental brackets to what is already on the building.

New cast iron installations

Half-round, ogee and moulded profiles in the sizes originally used on English houses, hung on cast brackets to a correct fall and bedded with the right jointing. Downpipes are fixed clear of the wall on spacers so the masonry behind can dry, which is exactly what plastic clipped tight to stone fails to do.

Sections can be supplied primed for on-site painting or factory finished in a durable coating, depending on the building and how it will be maintained.

Repair, reinstatement and restoration

Existing ironwork is very often worth saving. Sound sections can be taken down, stripped, treated and rehung with new fixings, and only genuinely failed lengths replaced. That keeps the character of the elevation and is frequently cheaper than a full replacement.

We also correct the common historic problem of cast iron that has simply been painted in place for decades until the back of the gutter has rusted through unseen.

Listed buildings and conservation areas

On a listed building the rainwater goods are part of the listing. Changing material or profile usually requires listed building consent, and like-for-like cast iron replacement is normally the least contentious route. We are used to working with conservation officers and can help evidence what is proposed.

Where genuine cast iron is not viable because of access, structure or budget, cast-iron-effect aluminium is a legitimate alternative that should be agreed in advance rather than assumed.
