Not every property calls for cast iron. New builds, oak-frame homes, contemporary barn conversions and everyday domestic extensions are far better served by modern rainwater systems — lighter, quicker to install, low maintenance and, in the case of seamless aluminium, effectively jointless for the life of the building.
This guide covers how we supply and install contemporary guttering across the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Berkshire — and why the modern options deserve serious consideration alongside the traditional.
The contemporary options
- Seamless aluminium — rolled on site from a single coil to the exact length of each run. No joints along the fascia, powder-coated in any RAL colour, and typically guaranteed for 25 years or more.
- Extruded aluminium — pre-formed lengths in half round, deepflow and ogee profiles. Lighter than cast iron, colour-through finishes, quick to install.
- Copper and zinc — traditional metals used in contemporary detailing on architect-designed homes, agricultural conversions and rural new builds.
- PVC — appropriate on outbuildings, sheds and budget-driven jobs; rarely our first recommendation on a home you intend to keep.
For most modern Cotswold homes, seamless aluminium is the honest workhorse — the material that quietly does the job for decades without demanding attention.
Supply: matching the property, not just the price
Contemporary does not mean generic. A well-specified system considers:
- Profile — half round for a softer, more traditional look; ogee or deepflow for higher-capacity runs on steeper roofs.
- Size — 125mm for large roof areas and steeper pitches, 112mm for standard domestic.
- Colour — anthracite grey, heritage black, moss green and stone tones are the most common on Cotswold properties.
- Downpipe layout — routed to gullies, water butts or soakaways in line with current building regulations.
We calculate roof area and rainfall intensity for each elevation rather than guessing at bracket spacing. On a 400 square metre roof in a high-intensity rainfall zone, undersized guttering is a call-out waiting to happen.
Installation: seamless aluminium on site
Seamless aluminium is the most common contemporary system we fit, and the installation sequence is where the value sits:
- Survey and measure each elevation individually.
- Roll the coil on site through a portable seamless machine, producing gutters up to 30 metres in a single length.
- Fit internal or external brackets at correct centres for the profile and roof area.
- Mitre and rivet corners — sealed, not siliconed over.
- Install downpipes and fittings in matching powder coat.
Because there are no joints along the run, the classic failure point of standard guttering — the union bracket — is simply removed from the equation.

When contemporary makes sense
Contemporary systems are the right call when:
- The property is a new build, extension or conversion.
- Long, continuous elevations would otherwise need many jointed lengths.
- Colour matching to modern windows, cladding or fascias is important.
- Ongoing maintenance budget is limited and low upkeep matters.
- The roof area or rainfall intensity demands high-capacity guttering.
